Peer review

A submitted manuscript is made anonymous and presented to two reviewers by the editors of Journal of Social Science Education (JSSE). The reviewers remain anonymous, and come from two different disciplines. The publishers decide about approval or refusal of the contribution on the basis of the reviews.

There are four types of decision: unchanged approval and publication, approval on condition of revision and publication afterwards, refusal of the presented version and publication on condition of a thorough reworking, refusal.

A lot of the manuscripts taken in consideration for publication are handed back to the authors for reworking. Editors and editorial department seek to keep the period between submission and publication of a manuscript as short as possible.

Important aspects of the examination

The anonymous process of examination does not only serve the purpose of guaranteeing the quality of JSSE. It also has the function of establishing an internal public of peer review, that makes an informal and scholarly communication before publication of an article possible and necessary.

Here are some of the questions the peer review is based on:

Does the manuscript make an important contribution to the field of Social Science Education (gain of knowledge?)
Is the text an original contribution to its field (originality)?
Is the text suitable for the scholarly image of JSSE (theory, interdisciplinary approach, internationalism)? (compare "Concept of the journal")
Does the text deal with a topic relevant for the field (relevance)?
Are content and argumentation sound and up to date with the state of he art?
Is the style adequate?
Does the contribution consider relevant literature necessary for the topic?

The form of manuscripts

Please follow our "Editorial Guidelines for Authors".

To protect anonymity, only the title should appear on the manuscript. Bibliography, formulations and notes should not contain any information identifying the author. The omitted information has to be enclosed on a separate piece of paper.
